The canned fruit cocktail is the ultimate fruit drink.
You get fresh fruits and a creamy texture, a little sweetener, and a dash of orange juice.
The main difference: they’re all natural.
“A lot of people are saying, ‘How is this different than real fruits and it’s like, no, it’s not, it isn’t,'” said Amanda M. Jones, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and a former author of the popular food blog Nutritional Nourishment.
“But it’s the perfect recipe for a really great afternoon.”
The answer to the question “Is this healthy?” is “Absolutely,” Jones said.
And you can find them in many grocery stores and online.
“There are a lot of healthful fruits and vegetables available that people would normally buy, but for a lot more than just healthy foods,” Jones added.
“You can find a whole slew of fruits and veggies in the canned fruit aisle and it is much more affordable.”
Canned fruit is a popular ingredient for sorbet cocktails because it contains all the vitamins and minerals that you’d find in a regular cocktail.
That includes vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and calcium, Jones said, so it’s a good source of vitamins for many people.
And if you’re not drinking your own juice, you can make your own.
“We make it at home with some simple ingredients, but you can add the juice of your choice and it will make a really healthy, flavorful drink,” Jones explained.
The real question is, “How much fruit juice do I need?”
“The best way to find out is by consuming a small amount,” Jones continued.
“I would recommend one to two teaspoons of fruit juice per week, or less than two teaspoons per day, depending on the type of fruit.
If you don’t have access to fresh fruit, it may be easier to find other ingredients that you can use.”
The real secret is to find fruit that is already in season.
“Some people would use a frozen version,” Jones recommended.
But if you can’t find any fruit, you might try making your own with a few ingredients: 1 cup water 1 cup orange juice 1 cup canned fruit juice 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon orange zest, to taste 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, to flavor 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt, to salt the fruit Jones recommends using canned fruit in a small glass of orange wine, which is a good idea for older people who don’t drink much wine.
“The wine will give you a nice, creamy texture,” Jones advised.
She also recommends adding fresh orange zests to the drink, if you’d like it to be more citrusy.
“It’s a great way to really taste the flavors,” Jones stressed.
“Canned fruit will give the drink a nice citrus flavor.”
When you’re ready to make your cocktail, it just needs to be stirred.
The orange juice, orange zester, and cinnamon sugar will help add flavor and color to the fruit.
The alcohol will give it a very drinkable texture.
“If you don: Mix the water with the orange juice,” Jones pointed out.
“Then add the spices and sugar.”
Once you add the fruit, make sure the cocktail is stirred.
Then pour the drink into a pitcher and serve.
“Mix the water and juice,” she said.
“Add the spices to the sugar and the cinnamon sugar to the alcohol.
Stir it all together and then drink it up.”
Make a big batch and store it in the fridge for up to a week.
“As soon as you can, make a batch,” Jones noted.
The next time you’re tempted to go to the grocery store, it might be a good time to make a drink of your own instead.
“Just make one large batch and keep it in your fridge, it will last you for months,” Jones suggested.
“Don’t be afraid to drink it if it’s available, or even if you don, because you will feel better about your health after.”
