The canned fruit market is booming in Canada and Australia, with consumers increasingly looking for fresh fruit.
The Canadian market has grown to be one of the biggest in the world, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), with the industry set to overtake the US market in 2019.
Canned fruit is typically processed and frozen and has a shelf life of about 12 months.
But many people are now switching to organic fruit and vegetables to save money.
The market in Australia, where the market is growing fastest, is worth $15 billion a year and is forecast to grow by nearly 80 per cent to $18 billion in 2019, according the Australian Business Review.
The trend is attracting young people from across the country, and some people are finding a healthier way to consume fresh produce.
There are some organic farmers who have been trying to bring fresh produce to the market for several years.
In 2015, Australian organic fruit farmer Dave Harkins started his own small organic market in a small town in Queensland called Gurnee.
He was already making organic fruit, but his focus was to get the freshest produce to market.
He has been selling organic fruit for about 10 years.
“I’m a huge organic farmer and I don’t like buying produce that I don´t like,” he said.
He started the Gurne Produce market because he thought it was a good idea, but he also felt like he could make money selling the fruits of his own garden.
“You know the old saying, the best way to make money is to make a difference.
That was my motivation for starting this market,” he told Business Insider.
He opened his store in 2015 and now he sells about 1,500 varieties of organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.
In the market, Harkens has grown his business from two to nine people.
“We’re a small operation, but we are very well known, very well supported and we get a lot of referrals from people that want to see organic produce,” he added.
The markets have also attracted a new crop of farmers and their young children.
“The kids are always coming in, they are always talking about the new crop, about the crop they have been growing,” Harkings said.
One of the more popular items sold on the market has been kiwi.
“They have been coming in for about a year now and we’ve got two to three dozen people every day buying kiwis,” he explained.
He said kiwises are now being sold in supermarkets in the US, and people are buying them at farmers markets and local farmers markets.
“Kiwis are a great alternative for the supermarket, but if you want to buy a large amount of kiwiris, that would be a very expensive item,” he continued.
The price of kiosks and other similar organic fruits has also increased.
“That has definitely come down a little bit, and that has been a good thing, because it’s a great way to diversify your buying,” he concluded.
