Posted July 05, 2018 11:59:25 A farmer is using a Canadian canning company to sell canned fruit to the public and he says he’s not allowed to complain about the product.
It’s a little more than a year since the Canopy Group closed its doors, and the company says it will stay open as long as it wants to.
But with a federal ban on imported fruit coming into effect on August 1, Canopy is looking to move quickly to change its way of producing and selling fruit in Canada.
Chris Withers is a long-time fruit farmer in Alberta, and in his new role as a consultant to Canopy, he says the company is looking at a number of things.
“They are looking at their distribution model.
They are looking into how they can make it better, to make it more efficient, to be more transparent about the way that they’re doing it, what the costs are, so we’re trying to find the right balance,” he said.
“But we can’t just do this by ourselves, we need a lot of support from the public.”
Witherss says the Canopies current system is not perfect.
It does not allow the company to keep the same inventory, it is not transparent about their costs, and they do not have a guarantee of what they will be selling.
But Witherses hope this new system will be a step in the right direction.
“We need to change the way we sell our product in Canada because we can do so much better than we do in the United States.
It just makes sense to start from scratch.”
Wethers says he thinks the best way to get canned fruit into the Canadian market is through a local grower.
“I think the best thing we can be doing is working with local growers.
We have all these different countries with different culture and different ways of growing.
In an emailed statement to CBC News, Canopys spokesperson said, “Our focus is on improving our process to make sure we are delivering the highest quality product and service to Canadians.””
The thing about Canada is they are growing it here, so I think if you can get that product here, you’re going to be doing a good job in Canada.”
